Piano Improvisation Comes in Different Styles

October 5, 2009 on 1:31 am | By admin | In Arts | No Comments

Some great piano improvisation artists play by ear—they don’t read music. They hear the tune in their heads and duplicate it on the piano. Others use their gift of imagining new music and their knowledge of written music. We can all envision the composer tapping out notes on the piano and then scribbling the music on paper. Composers have to get it on paper—it’s the only way to sell it! Finally there is the musician who hears a new sound in his mind while sitting with pencil in hand, writes it out, and then goes to the piano to play. However you want to do piano improvisation, there is a best place to begin: study with someone who already has the skill and imagination of improvisation.
