What’s wrong with a laundromat in the neighborhood?

Apparently the New Haven (Conneticut) Whalley neighborhood is too good for a laundromat in their neighborhood. What, is the smell of fabric softeners going to overpower the lovely smell of gasoline fumes in their little burg? The residents fought for over a year to keep a laundromat business from opening up in a Walgreen’s shopping plaze, citing the possible ill effects and likely crime element who hang out at laundromats. Huh? People who wash their clothes are criminals? The town rejoiced when a different tenant came forward to possible rent the vacant space: a paint store. So if you paint your house, you’re cool, but if you get dirty doing it, you’re not…is this right?
